The city of Amarillo, originally named Oneida, is situated in the Llano Estacado region. The availability of the railroad and freight service provided by the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad contributed to the city's growth as a cattle-marketing center in the late 19th century.
Amarillo was once the self-proclaimed "Helium Capital of the World" for having one of the country's most productive helium fields. The city is also known as "The Yellow Rose of Texas" (as the city takes its name from the Spanish word for yellow), "Yellow City" for its name, and "Rotor City, USA" for its V-22 Osprey hybrid aircraft assembly plant. Amarillo operates one of the largest meat-packing areas in the United States. Pantex, the only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility in the country, is also a major employer. The location of this facility also gave rise to the nickname "Bomb City".

It wouldn't be a trip to Amarillo, TX without a visit to Cadillac Ranch and The Slug Bug Ranch. Just so happens that The Slug Bug Ranch was in front of where we stayed. We had to do like a tourist would and spray paint on a vehicle, of course we didn't realize that with the recent rain the Cadillacs were going to be surrounded by so much water and unlike some people there was no way we were taking our shoes off and standing in that muddy water!! Next best thing was to spray paint the ground. After doing so Jim really wished he had put on a rubber glove. When we got back and washed off all the yucky spray paint, we decided to grab our sharpies to leave our make at The Slug Bug Ranch cars.
Wildcat Bluff Discovery Center and Rock Garden Hike - We did a nice easy hike at Wildcat Bluff on Tuesday afternoon; it was flat just enough to get outdoors for a bit. On Wednesday we took a ride to Palo Duro Canyon State Park for a hike. We decided to do Rock Garden Hike everyone was saying it's a tough one but worth it when you reach the top and boy, they weren't kidding. I don't think the climb was as bad as the heat. Didn't really factor in the sun beating on the rocks which makes it even hotter. We were very proud that we did make it to the top and even happier when we made it back to the car. Another accomplishment for the both of us in the books!
