Deadwood, SD & Wonderland Caves August - September 2024
WIKI: "Deadwood (Lakota: Owáyasuta;[failed verification] "To approve or confirm things") is a city that serves as county seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. It was named by early settlers after the dead trees found in its gulch. The city had its heyday from 1876 to 1879, after gold deposits had been discovered there, leading to the Black Hills Gold Rush. At its height, the city had a population of 25,000, attracting Old West figures such as Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok (who was killed there).
The entire town has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District, for its well-preserved Gold Rush-era architecture. Deadwood's proximity to Lead often prompts the two towns being collectively named "Lead-Deadwood".
The population was 1,156 at the 2020 census and according to 2023 census estimates, the city is estimated to have a population of 1343."

It was a very nice Saturday and decided to explore Deadwood, SD. We started out at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery to see the graves of "Wild Bill Hickok" and "Calamity Jane", what a fascinating self-guided tour this was. So much history in the town of Deadwood. We wanted to take one of the many cave tours as well and after arriving at the Wonderland Caves, which I thought was going to be guided via a motorized vehicle, we started our walk down a path to the cave entrance and I was thinking we must be picking up the ride at the entrance Nope this was a walking tour. Once again, I had to put on my big girl pants and prayed that I wouldn't hyperventilate while under the ground. Have to say I did much better than I thought I was going to do, of course I had my "rock" in front of me the whole time.
